An Ode to Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream

I've mentioned about a thousand times how dry my skin is, right? I figured that it was only right to dedicate an entire post to the #1, most absolutely necessary component of my skincare routine.

I started using this a few years ago and have never looked back. Back in the day, I started out using Olay moisturizer. I didn't really properly cleanse and care for my skin at that point, so it seemed okay, but eventually I noticed how thirsty my skin was. Not really knowing where to go from there, I tried out Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. It was definitely an improvement from the Olay, but still not quite right for my skin. After a ton of research online, I noticed a lot of people were showing love to Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream.

Right on the packaging, it lets you know that this moisturizer means business. It was used by the folks who took part in "Greenland's First Ascent" expedition in 2005. If a product was tested and loved by people braving such harsh, cold conditions, it must be pretty good for everyday use, right? It is formulated with hydrating ingredients such as Squalene, Antarcticine, and Imperata Cylindrica. I wasn't familiar with two out of three of those ingredients (just keeping it real), but the Kiehl's website has great information about the properties of each ingredient and why they are beneficial to the product. Squalene aids in moisturizing and softness, Antarticine helps smooth things out and keep wrinkles at bay, and Imperata Cylindrica is high in potassium and provides hydration.

The texture of this moisturizer feels really nice on the skin. It is thick, but easily absorbs. I usually place a large dot on either cheek, then a smaller dot on my chin and forehead. From there I gently rub it into my skin. I like to be extra with the moisture so I usually top it off with some kind of oil, but it's great on its own.

To let you know how ride or die I am for this, I ran out of it a few weeks ago and didn't have a backup jar. I couldn't make it to a store that sells Kiehl's until the following weekend and my skin was angry until I picked more up and put this back into my routine. I've tried other moisturizers and nothing works as well as this does for my skin. The website claims that it is good for all skin types, but of course this kind of thing is very personal. If you're interested I would highly recommend picking up a sample to see if it's a good fit. They also make a version with SPF in it. The texture is a little different to me so I prefer the original and then using my own SPF after, but if you're looking to cut out a step it could be a good option. I've probably gone through about five or six jars of this since I started using it and I don't see myself ever looking back. The 4.2oz jars are $47.50 a pop which is definitely pricey, but for me it is worth it. A jar will usually last 6 months or longer for me since a little bit seems to go a long way. I've generally been very impressed with Kiehl's as a brand, and this is what started the obsession.

While I don't see myself ever not having this on hand, I am interested in experimenting with other moisturizers to see if anything else out there stacks up. Do you guys have anything that you love?
