Happy Sunday guys! This crisp Autumn weather has me inspired to talk about one of my favorite things- lipstick. I love the way that lipstick can change a look, or just tie everything together.
I'm really into a good nude, but also love something bolder for when I'm wearing minimal makeup. When the weather starts to cool down I start to reach for pink tones less and get more into more brown nudes or colors that are a bit darker. As you can see from the photo above I definitely have a type, but each of these lipsticks have their own personality and look different when they are actually on my lips. I chose a few colors from my favorite lipstick formulas, which are from MAC, Bite, and Chanel, since I know that's what I'm going to get the most wear from this season.
Swatches with flash from left to right: Bite Honeycomb, MAC Velvet Teddy, MAC Retro, Chanel Maggy, Bite Thistle, MAC Stone. |
Swatches with (minimal) natural light from left to right: Bite Honeycomb, MAC Velvet Teddy, MAC Retro, Chanel Maggy, Bite Thistle, MAC Stone. |
As you can tell, when swatched, the differences in color become more apparent. Also please forgive my natural light, I'm going to have to invest in some lighting equipment now that the days are getting shorter and sunlight will be in short supply. ALSO please ignore my weird lip shape. I don't know if it's how my jaw aligns or what but my mouth shape looks really weird in photos, like very unsymmetrical. Although lipstick can look very different on other people depending on the pigmentation of their lips, I appreciate it when lipstick swatches are provided since they can serve as a jumping off point to know what you're looking for. AND THIRD, if you want to get your lip pierced don't. I mean unless you really want to. But probably don't. I got a Monroe piercing done when I was 18 and that lovely hole you see above my lip is what remains of it now. Pierce your nose, ears, bellybutton, whatever. Just know that if you're approaching 30 in a few years you might decide you're too old for that piercing now and it probably won't close right. I lovingly applied Vitamin E oil to it every night for months after as well as Lucas' Paw Paw ointment, and I still have a hole there. Now that the disclaimers are done, let's get into it!

Bite Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Honeycomb- $26 |
This is the latest lipstick in my collection and I am OB-sessed. I had been wearing Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Bitch Perfect for like a few months straight, which was my perfect nude. Going into fall though, I knew I wanted something in a more brown-nude shade. I had been really happy with Bite's formula so I decided to hit Sephora and see what they had to offer. After about 10 seconds of browsing I picked up this fella and it's been love. Bite's formula is great because it is super creamy and feels really light and moisturizing on the lips. This one smells like mint, which isn't my favorite lip scent but it's not unpleasant by any means. This color is great because it goes with pretty much any look- it doesn't clash if you're wearing intense blush or have on heavy eye makeup.

MAC Lipstick in Velvet Teddy-$17.50 |
MAC Velvet Teddy is a tried and true standby. MAC was one of the first makeup brands that I really got into, so I one point I had about 30 MAC lipsticks- WAY too many for me personally. I parred down my collection a while back and this one had to make the cut. It's a bit deeper than Bite's Honeycomb, but still gives that gorgeous brown/nude vibe. I personally like MAC's formula, although I think it's not quite as moisturizing as the other two brands I'm featuring. I personally don't mind, especially for the price point and variety offered.

Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Maggy- $37 |
Maggy was the first Chanel lipstick that I tried, and I'm so glad I did. It's definitely pricier than others that I've tried, but I think it's worth it for something that I will wear often. The Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating formula is like the name implies- very hydrating. It really feels like more of a balm than a lipstick. It does have a slight shimmer, but it doesn't look glittery, I would say it looks more glossy. I bought this shade for the purpose of something that I could throw on when I'm wearing minimal makeup but want to have a more natural and put together look, and it has really served its purpose so far. Bottom line, I'm a big fan of this formula and purchased the color Cecile as well, which is a lovely light pink. I would definitely like to try other colors and formulas in the future. I will say that the one downside to these lipsticks is the scent. It's a floral, perfume-y fragrance. It's probably meant to be a more "sophisticated" scent, but it's not super pleasant seeing as you apply lipstick directly under your nose. It doesn't last long however so I'm fine dealing with it.

Bite Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Thistle- $26 |
Thistle was the first Bite lipstick I picked up. Right off the bat, I was super impressed by the formula. I bought it in Vegas when my friend Amber and I took a trip there with our husbands. Throughout all of the giant alcoholic slushies, drunk shopping, and eating, this lipstick was surprisingly low maintenance for a non-nude color. If I wasn't reapplying between activities, it left a really nice kind of stain on my lips. Just like Honeycomb, the formula is super comfortable. This color has a more citrusy smell which I prefer over the mint. I'm not sure if different colors are assigned different scents? I tried to Google it and didn't find anything conclusive, but the scent doesn't linger long anyway.

MAC Lipstick in Retro- $17.50 |
Retro is my favorite red for fall. I really don't wear red lipsticks often, and I tend to save the true reds for when I get further into winter. Orange reds are more summery to me, and bright red reminds me of Christmas. This brick red serves as a nice transition color between summer and winter for me. I love a red lip with really minimal eye makeup. This one looks great with just some mascara, tinted moisturizer, some bronzer, and a neutral blush. I really like it because it's red without being super in your face. And nothing against red lipstick! A red lip is a gorgeous, classic look for a reason. It's just not something that I wear super often.

MAC Lipstick in Stone- $17.50 |
Stone is one of my all-time favorite dark lipsticks. It's a gorgeous dark grey-taupe color. As I've said before, I'm a fan of the MAC formula. This one tends to wear down well, maybe not quite as great as the Bite lipsticks, but I don't look like a crazy person if I can't reapply quickly. The color is fairly unique and has sparked many an "I love your lipstick!" conversations. It might be a little grey for some people, but it makes me feel so cozy, if that makes sense. Since I wear glasses and my eye makeup gets downplayed because of that, a bold lip can really be just the thing I need to make my lips stand out and balance things out. I try to stick to pretty neutral makeup when I wear this one, but you've gotta do what you like. That's just my preference. Not to get too down but it really bums me out when people talk shit about other people's makeup. It's just another form of self expression and not everyone is going to love the same stuff you do, whether it's crazy lipstick, a ton of bronzer, or a holographic highlighter. Do you, boo.
Do you guys have any favorite lipsticks, fall or otherwise? Let me know in the comments!
